HUMAX PVR (UK)
« on: Sunday 17 March 19 09:51 GMT (UK) »

Not a technical problem, fortunately!  A recent addition to the Freeserve Channels is the Smithsonian Channel on Channel 99.  This is on my TV but still not on the Humax – ‘99’ still shows as being ‘’Yesterday +1’ although not receiving programmes. I have done a retune three times but to no avail.  This area’s transmitter is Tacolnseston (Norfolk).  There are some programmes that I’m interested in e.g. tonight: ‘Aerial Ireland’ but it will probably be reshown soon.

I believe the Norfolk ITV Region is "Meridian".  The Freeview TV guide at https://www.freeview.co.uk shows channel 99 in the Meridian region as Smithsonian.
According to https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Tacolneston  that transmitter DOES carry the COM 7 multiplex which contains Ch99 Smithsonian.
So you SHOULD be able to receive it.
Try a box "Reset to Factory Condition" - this will also force a channel rescan. I find this sometimes picks up channels that a normal rescan does not - especially in marginal signal areas.

I always thought Meridian covered Kent.  Has it expanded?

Thanks for the replies.

greenrig: The ITV for East Anglia is Anglia TV not Meridian; our region's TV transmitters are Sudbury, Tacolneston and Sandy Heath – see: https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Tacolneston.  I will try the “Reset to Factory Condition” as you recommend – fingers crossed!  :D

I was sure the Felixstowe area was served by Anglia/Sudbury, but I've been away for a few years :)

Best of luck with the reset!

My hubby says "is your Humax box HD ?" Smithsonian channel is on multiplex 55 which is a HD frequency. Presume your TV is HD because you are picking it up on that.
hope that helps. :)

You most likely have seen this but Smithsonian website says it’s not available outside the US, but that doesn’t explain why the TV can get it

Smithsonian Channel's website appears to have a rather selective view of the world, but the channel is definitely available on UK Freeview in general...

https://www.freeview.co.uk/why-freeview/channels/smithsonian-channel

... and via Tacolneston in particular (scroll down to COM7 MUX):

https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Tacolneston

As molar's hubby has pointed out, this is an HD channel so your Humax PVR will need to be an HD box. Again, only repeating molar, but it's possible your TV is HD but your PVR isn't. In which case, the PVR simply can't 'see' it.
