Colin, just to recap for me!

Robert Aitken, your wife's direct line, was the son of James Aitken and Martha Houston? Have you been able to confirm this with his death reg (post 1855?)?

James Aitken and Helen Anderson (m. 1791 Barony) were the parents of Rev James and William who died at Hawthornbank in 1878. Some of their children include William b. 1793, Jean b. 1796, Alexander b. 1799, James b. 1802 and Helen b. 1805. All births in Barony.

We can now ignore this couple and their children?

So, some of the children to James and Martha include:

William b. 1797 Paisley
Hugh b. 1799 Inveresk
Agnes b. 1802 Glasgow
James b. 1805 Glasgow
John Hutchison b. 1807 Glasgow
Margaret b. 1809 Kilmarnock
Robert b. 1811 Kilmarnock...confirmed in the OPRs as 7th child
Marrion b. 1815 Kilmarnock

Colin, I think Margaret Aitken/ Templeton died likely between 1851-54. This is her 1851 entry with sister Marion in the household (with Margaret and Robert's ages mistranscribed):

Robert Templeton 71 tailor b. Glasgow
Margaret Templeton 71 b. Kilmarnock, AYR
Thomas Templeton 19
Agnes Templeton 12
Marion Templeton 10
Margaret Templeton 8
Marion Aitken 32 sister in law Weaver Cotton Mill b. Kilmarnock, AYR

Address: 10 St Joseph's Place Abercomby St, Glasgow

There is a marriage/banns in Glasgow on 17 December 1854 Glasgow between Marion Aitken and Robert Templeton. This looks to be them by 1861:

Robert Templeton 51 tailor
Marison Templeton 42
James Templeton 6
Jane Templeton 50 sister

Address: 32 Orr Street House No 4 Glasgow/Bridgeton

There are also two other children showing for Marion and Robert. Catherine b. 1859 and died in 1861. Also a Robert b. 1857 who died in 1858.

Thomas Templeton, son of Robert T and Margaret Aitken I think died in 1857 in Glasgow going by the index with mother's maiden name of Aitken.

Can't easily see Marion's death on the SP index so far.

Hi Monica,
Thanks for your info. I will follow that through.
Sadly my wife's GGgrandfather Robert Aitken died between 1848 & 1851, his youngest son Thomas was baptised 12 Feb 1848 Kilmaurs. Roberts wife Janet Carey was a pauper, widow in 1851.

I had not looked at the family for some years but a recent post on Roots (About a James Aitken footballer Ayrshire) prompted me to have another look at the family. all to no avail but I will have another go at trying to find the real James & William.
