Death of John Maxfield, Birmingham
« on: Tuesday 26 March 19 13:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I do hope somebody can help me.

I cannot find a 'suitable' date of death for my great grandfather and yet I know a lot about him. He was born in Ecclesall Bierlow(Sheffield) in 1850, but moved to Birmingham in his mid 20s where he remained until he died. He lived in Blews Terrace George Street West and Barker Street. He was dead before his daughter Alice was married on 26th December 1903 and before my grandfather married in 1916. His youngest daughter was born in January to March 1892. His wife died in 1899 and the death certificate describes her as the wife of John Maxfield, a Cutler journeyman, which doesn't suggest he was yet dead although their son, also John registered the death and was present at it. The death was in Derby Terrace, Rosebery Street.

I don't know these areas of Birmingham. Are they now completely different? Where would he have worked as a cutler in this area of Birmingham.

I would be very grateful for any help.

Tony Maxfield  :)

ps there must be a ton of my relatives who still live in the Birmingham area, but I know none. Any suggestions for research projects!

Thank you Carole and Priscilla. That is the right census, But I'm afraid there is too much evidence for him to have died as late as 1929 and he was definitely born in 1850. It looks as though he should have died between 1892 and 1903 or at least 1899 and 1903, but I can't find it.

It is always possible that he and his wife had split up and he had left so the family acted as though he was dead to them.

Also don't be too quick discount the age on the death entry - the info on death certs is only as good as the knowledge of the person supplyng it. Ages at death can often be out by a few years.

Thanks Emeltom
Worth looking at him not being around, but can't find any suitable later censuses which might be him.
I appreciate about the dates . Have found that before but documents consistently show dob 1850.
Is there any reason why it might not be registered? Were any destroyed?

Does any one have any info on the other points.

Tony

Have you had a look at FindMyPast's Prison Registers for a John Maxfield - 3 records born 1850/1853. There are several reports in the on line newspapers (British Newspaper Archive/FindMyPast) that link to the FindMyPast records.

Have had a look at both but nothing definite to link him to "your" John Maxfield although one newspaper report mentions a wife "Eliza".

Possibility?

There's some Birmingham Court calendar records from 1909-13 for a John Maxfield b c1848. Occupation frame filer . Has a record going back to 1887, mostly for stealing and some assaults (one case was stealing 76lb of mutton!)

However 1891 census shows two other Johns the same age range in the Birmingham area, one occupation chandelier work, with wife Eliza, and the other gun action filer, wife Sophia
