Have just come across these posts and you may have already found what you need, Tineke.

The records from the parish of Tarbolton show his marriage to Margaret Finlay on 15th Jan.1785 and his occupation as a ' Weaver.'

Falkyrn's mention of the Ayrshire burials may be the place to look after all.

Please let me know if you are successful as we have a common ancestor.

If he died before Civil Registration began in 1855 the Burial records in parts of Ayrshire are pretty poor ( Tarbolton's known parish records show deaths/burials from 1783-1785 and then 1829-1848 )

Checking the Ayrshire Burials index shows only 2 James McWhinnie's buried before 1855 one a weaver the other a "seafaring man"

Just rechecked the information - the James McWhinnie, Weaver, who died of "inflammation" in 1832 was in Newton not Tarbolton.

The distance between Tarbolton and Newton would be approximately 8-10 miles. I cannot imagine anything more than dirt tracks, rather than roads as we today know them. That distance could be travelled easily in 4 hours.
