By 26 September 1884 the twins Francis and Robert were described as orphans in the poor law school records.  On that date they were finally discharged: "taken out by brother".

Thomas Napier Thorne, born Edinburgh 1863 (died aged 4, Dec qtr 1867 Greenwich)
William Swanston Thorne*, mmn Napier, birth reg Sep qtr 1865 St Pancras
John Swanston Thorne, mmn Napier, birth reg Jun qtr 1869 Greenwich (died Dec qtr 1870 aged 1).

*he later turns up as William Swanston Fisher-Thorne - was he brought up by a Fisher family after 1871?

Janet Thorne, 30, died Greenwich Sep qtr 1873.

Father?:

Henry P Thorne, 42, died St George Hanover Square Sep qtr 1882.

29th August 1895 baptism Henry Peniston Thorne parents Francis and Justina occ. Labourer address
 3 Munden Cottages born 4th July 1895

Francis Robert same as above born 2 nd May 1893  both private baptisms together.

Wow I went out for the afternoon and came back to all this news!  Thank you all so much.  Things are beginning to make a little sense but some censuses and the schools had dates of birth and ages wrong.  I didn't know they were twins.  I will look into this further now I have some additional information.  How sad it all became though.  Yes we knew William Swanston had Fisher as his third name.  That's a good point about him being taken in by a Fisher family!  I have a lot now to pass on to my cousin.  William was her great grandfather.

Possible for William in 1881 is as William S. FISHER, 15 b Camden Town, a carpenter's apprentice in Kensington (apprenticed to James Caleb Wilmot).
