Looking for MENTON - MENTANE - MINTANE from East Galway Woodlawn area

MENTON [MENTANE MINTANE] FAMILY FROM WOODLAWN
I have recently discovered that my GG Grandfather Patrick Menton c1834 from Gorey Wexford possibly came from Galway as his brother Peter c1809 who died in 1881 in Gorey mentioned a brother Thomas he had in Woodlawn at that time.

The Mentons were farmers and herders and are scattered all across Ireland but I am trying to prove the Galway connection.

Searching the church registry at Aughrim I found about 30 Menton records with name variations such as Mentane/Mintaine/Mintane/Manton/Minton and at Cappataggle church I found about 30 more. Ballymacward and Kiltullagh there were some more also.

I am only just beginning to research Galway as I have practically exhausted all searches in Wexford.

Even up to 1901 and 1911 censuses and  up to 1920s I have found records for Mentons near the Woodlawn area.

I need help if any is available to trace Thomas and find out if all family members were born in Galway.

I also lost track of Patrick after his brother Peter died in 1881 and Patricks wife died in 1900 in Wicklow as a widow so Patrick died somewhere in between.

All help or advice greatly appreciated.

Have you looked at Irishgenealogy.ie for the area?

A Thomas Menton died Apr 02 1903 aged 70 from Corballymore (near Eyrecourt)

He is shown as 68 and MANTON on the 1901 census LINK

His widow Anne is shown as MINTON in 1911 still living with the CONNOR family LINK

She died on Jul 10 1922 and the informant is Mary CONNOR noting she is listed as her grand-daughter LINK

Thanks for that very informative reply. As it happens I have searched irishgenealogy and:
1.  Thomas Menton 1903 death Corballymore Ballinasloe age 70_Herder is one I already had but cant prove despite Corballymore only being a few kilometers from Woodlawn...6-7 roughly I estimate from online map. Occupation as herder is interesting as that was a traditional occupation with the Menton family in 1800s.
2. 1901 census Thomas Manton Corballymore age 68 Galway_Herder is one I actually missed so thanks again as I have now filed this for reference.

There is a marriage on Mar 31 1864 in Grange Parish (Part of Bullaun) between
Thomas MINTANE of Kiltulla and Ann CONNORS of Grange LINK

This was before civil records and unfortunately does not show their fathers' names
This links with the 1901 census for the Thomas & Anne living with CONNORS

This Thomas would have been born c 1843 or before (Full age at marriage assumed as not marked minor)
Also the 1901 census states he was born in Co. Galway but he only made his mark and the enumerator may have made an assumption rather than accepting it as 100% correct.


In the same general area near Woodlawn
a Thomas MANTON of Cahernagarry aged 38 (F) James =>bc 1832
married on May 16 1870 in Kilreekle Church, Bullaun LINK
Mary MONAHAN of same address aged 20 (F) John

They had at least one child Catherine MENTANE on Dec 26 1870 LINK
She died in 1871 I think - the record image is not yet available LINK

We can only presume that Mary died before 1876 as Thomas remarried then
There is a death in 1876 but it is in a month after the marriage date and in Aughrim

Thomas MANTON of Cahernagarry Full age & a widower (F) James
married on Feb 28 1876 in Lickerrig, Loughrea LINK
Margaret SPELMAN of Carramore, full age (F) James
Both fathers are deceased and one witness is named Monaghan

This is most likely Margaret living in Bullaun (near Woodlawn) in 1901 LINK
They had at least six children all have civil records

Mary MANTEN 1878 Aug 01; died Oct 25 1909
Michael MANTEN 1880 Mar 11; died Jun 13 1883 (MANTON)
Thomas MANTEN 1881 Dec 18; possibly died 1898 (MANTON) needs proof of connection
James MANTON 1886 Jan 02; died Oct 03 1903
John MANTON 1890 Dec 01

This Thomas MANTON died Mar 02 1901 aged 70 at Cahernagarry
Unfortunately Thomas died just before the census to see a county of birth for him

By 1911 Margaret had died (Apr 27 1910) and John was living with a relative named Honoria Spellman LINK
He married in 1901 LINK

Difficult to prove who may be correct but hopefully this information helps rule them in or out!

All I can say it has been my good luck to meet yo myluck and this is why Rootschat is such a special forum for genealogy. The users have always been exceptionally helpful and this time especially you have gone way beyond just helping and I commend you on your research and knowledge.
I have been filing church records for a bit now on Galway and I have added your collection to my files and notes on Galway Mentons.
I am still gathering and filing stuff but when I get around to putting it all together I am sure your collection will be added somewhere.
