Mary Bains Death 1898, and this is the only time, I have seen a Ships Captain.

So now, I will except that, he most likely became a Captain, after he died, thanks to family stories.

Hi Grothenwell,

Quote
I do hope he is your guy, as I know what it is like to try to track down Sailors (no saucy replies please, thank you!). For my own selfish reasons can I ask where you found the crew list perhaps it will allow me to look for my guys,

Hya Kenjo
Well that's some amount of information! As for your Alexander being a "ships captain" there are many reasons why the family thought that he was SC. Maybe he said it in jest at some time, the story of his life got twisted, a bit like Chinese whispers. I have a 3x g/granddad who put on his second marriage certificate that his father's occupation was a soldier in the army. What a story teller! He never was a soldier he was a weaver and died in 1823! I think he was trying to impress the new wife! I can also remember being at the bakers van with my greatgrandfather and him telling me that he used to be a baker and made all the cakes and bread on the van. For years I believed this, even when I was older and knew he was a miner all his life, a part of me still believed he was a baker!

Going to take a proper look at the web site you put forward, it looks interesting and you never know what you might find.

Thanks for your interest, guys :)
I am going to post another, little tree soon, in regard to the 1871c, where there is an Eliza Bain living next door to Charlotte Bain, I am not positive about this, but maybe she is a Niece-in-law.
You all might be able to work it out.
And along the way a relative might read it!!!!!
Wouldn't that be grand! ;D

Got to say kenjo Im very impressed by what youve managed to establish for that time era. Reading it has been wuite inspirational
Ive spent years running around in circles trying to find Thomas Maxwell a mariner by trade remoured to have been from Aberdeen. Born around 1800 he died in NZ waters in 1842. There is not much available in that era.
We suspect he had ties to a Sarah Maxwell as he names his ship after her and possibly the names of his children John, George, James,Patrick, Robert and Andrew relate to his earlier Scottish existance.
Here is another  link which has lots of good Aussie sites.

Hi Ya ysabeau, :D :D
That is a good question. :D
I do have Charlotte's Testate, and she was worth about 87 pounds.
I suppose that, If I ever get to England, I could lookup the Maritime Museum, (if that is where I go), and see if she did get a pension....
I hadn't thought of that!! Thanks for the thought ysabeau ;D

Hi Ya!
I have looked at 1837 online, for deaths at sea, between 1870 and 1874, which is when I think he died. I have tried just about all of Scotland, and parts of Australia.
Aparantly, if they die within a country's waters, they should be lodged with THAT country, but if they die in international waters, they should be lodged within their home country. I think that is how it works.

I am thrilled though, with the 1861 C, because,  have found a son, in the household, which I didn't know about.
his name was William, so this means that Alexander Bain and his wife Charlotte Gray had Jane, William, Charlotte and Mary.........Great Hey.
