The Brown family
« on: Friday 05 April 19 16:38 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters.
I know that this is a photo of the Brown family, but can anyone put some sort of date to it? I need this to try to work out which of their children are shown here. As I am poor at putting ages to people in old photos, some suggestion as to the ages of the individuals shown would also help.
Many thanks for any help at all,
Regards, Scobie

I would say they were around 2.4.6 & 8 and it looks to have been taken around the early 1900s

I would say slightly earlier around early - mid 1890's.

Hello again Rootschatters.
Thank you, Treetotal and jim1, for your quick responses.
Henry Brown married Julia in late 1888. Their children, as far as I can find, were:-
Ethel Agnes, b.1889
George Harold, b. 1891
(these first two appear in the 1891 census, then seem to disappear completely, although I could find no reference to a death for either).
Raymond Sidney, b. 1892
Percy Charles, b. 1894
Marjorie Helen, b. 1897
Hugh Lambert, b. 1903
Kathleen Rena, b. 1905
Constance Beryl, b. 1907
Arthur H., b. 1913
None appear in the local church registers, but the chapel was very strong in this area.
Working on the suggested ages, with the young girl appearing to be the oldest child, it seems probable to me that the children shown are Ethel Agnes, George Harold or Raymond Sidney, Percy Charles and Marjorie Helen. By my calculation, that would then place the photograph at 1897 to 1899. Please feel happy to correct me if you believe me to be in error.
Again, my thanks to you all for your help, for now and hopefully in the future (I have more photos that I shall looking to date at some point).
All my best regards,
from Scobie

Hello again Rootschatters.
Thank you, Treetotal and bearkat, for your replies. I was hoping that perhaps the varied apparel of the people shown might aid with a date. The full photograph has nothing else that would appear to help with dating, although I am informed that it is postmarked 1908 (therefore taken slightly earlier than that). Joseph Caffyn was postmaster there from about 1895 to at least 1922, perhaps longer. I will therefore mark it down as about 1904. Again, many thanks,
from Scobie

Sorry, ignore that last post. It should have gone elsewhere.
