Per reply #20, he appears to be born David Trelfer, mother's maiden surname Sinnock.

Marriage, Steyning, 4th q 1852, William Trelfer + on same page Ann Sinnick.

In 1861 William Trelfer, journeyman baker, + wife Ann and children Lucy, Anne, William, Frances & Joseph are living at 55 Elder Street, Brighton.

Alfred Moss's military papers show that he had a tattoo on his left arm with the name C. Sinnock

not finding any birth entries on FreeBMD or GRO indexes for persons below from 1871 census to confirm mother's maiden name

Mary   Trelfer   -            1863      Sussex, England
Ruth   Trelfer   -            1866      Sussex, England
