Forsyth of Eyemouth
« on: Monday 08 April 19 16:16 BST (UK) »
Help needed please.

I have some notes on J and G Forsyth - listed as merchants at Eyemouth. I`ve written Rutherfords, which I think was the book I found it in and page 694.

Is it possible for a quick look-up for the year ? I believe about 1800. Unfortunately, I didn`t make a note of the year on my visit to Hawick Heritage Hub in 2017 !

James Forsyth born about 1770 ( from 1841 census ) is my direct ancestor.

This directory has been digitised and is online at the Internet Archive, so you should be able to check it yourself from home. You can browse it online, including jumping to pages, or download a PDF.

P.S. It was published in 1866. Actually the bibliographical details from the National Library of Scotland on that page give the wrong date!

It’s gigantic, yes! A very long time ago (>25 years?) I started indexing all names in there, including in the lists of societies / organisations at the start of each section. I got a long way through, so should maybe look to see about finishing it, and putting the resulting index online as part of GENUKI.

I`m going back on this one as I got the wrong J Forsyth.

James Forsyth born about 1770, 1841 census lived in High Street, Eyemouth with his wife Sophia.

One of their sons was also called James, this would be the one listed in Rutherfords.

This James was born 4th June 1797 at Eyemouth. The next record I have been able to find is on the Valuation Rolls for Eyemouth in 1865, listed below his brother. I cannot find him on any census either in Scotland or England.

Help needed to send me in the right direction please.
The Rutherfords entry has him as Dr James Forsyth Surgeon and Druggist, that`s on page 696 according to my notes, then page 690 has him as a Medical Practitioner and Public Vaccinator and
also an Hon. Surgeon for the Berwickshire Arillery Corps.

I think I have some of this wrong !!

James Forsyth was born about 1770 in Berwickshire, also his wife Sophia (Suffy) Grieve. 1841 they lived in High Street Eyemouth.

Their first child Jean was born in 1795, died 1796 Eyemouth.
James born 1797
Robert  b 1799
Grieve or Peter b 1801
Christian b 1803.

I now think the James who was a doctor was from another generation.

It`s the Scottish naming pattern that`s got to me !!!
