Baptism of John Reed in Nuthurst 1776-78.
« on: Monday 08 April 19 21:46 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Am having trouble locating a baptism for my 4x gt grandfather John Reed (1776/78-1859). The 1851 Census (HO107/1650/172/20) shows him as being born in Nuthurst, Sussex.

I have thus far been unable to find a baptism for him at all. Can anyone assist please?

Here is a previous thread in which John features as regards his marriage & children: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=670240.msg5154558#msg5154558

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi

Closest I can see is in Shipley which according to genuki is 4 miles from Nuthurst but a bit later than the dates you have.

John READ bpt. 18 June 1780 Shipley son of John and Sarah Read.

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for your reply, very much appreciated.

It is certainly one to keep on file, being close in both date and place.  A definite possible.

My thanks again.

Kind regards

Hi,

This may or may not assist in finding the baptism that I am looking for, but I have found a couple of settlement certificates for John Reed's in the Sussex Poor Law records.

My 4x gr grandfather John Reed ends up in Billingshurst.

The settlement certificates show a John Reed of Billingshurst but originally from Shipley (if I read/understand it right! ;D) who is married. It is dated 27th March 1780. Link here: https://www.sussexrecordsociety.org/dbs/pl/getrecord/1217/

The second certificate is for a John Reed of Billingshurst originally of Nuthurst dated the 27th January 1788. Link here: https://www.sussexrecordsociety.org/dbs/pl/getrecord/1232/

Two different John's? Are they related?

A trip to the West Sussex Record Office at Chichester may be on the cards I think, if I can afford it that is as I don't drive!

Does anyone know what sort of information one would find on a Settlement Certificate?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Living in Shipley but legally settled in Billingshurst

It seems to be a brief memorandum
