Black from Grange, Burt.
« on: Wednesday 10 April 19 10:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My great grandfather Anthony Bradley married a widow in Greenock, Scotland in 1876.  Her name was Margaret Black (formerly married to Moris Downie.)  Richard and Margaret had one daughter called Anne born circa 1871.  Margaret went on to have four children with Anthony.  Margaret's parents were Richard Black and Anne McGonigle from Grange, Burt.  Would like to connect with any Black family from this area who would have connections.

Thank you.

Many thanks myluck.  I just found the marriage info on irishgenealogy but the image is not available yet.  Also found the birth in Derry of their daughter Ann Downing.  So the surname changes several times as it was Dowie in Greenock.  Was unaware of a second child.

Much appreciated.

I'm presuming you are aware that Moses (and variants!) died in Greenock in 1874 aged 38
So they obviously moved from Ireland before that

I don't see another child in Ireland or Scotland but with three years between the birth of Mary and Moses' death there may have been.

There is a tree on ancestry that shows some information that is seriously incorrect about this family however on checking I am confident that
Mary DOWNEY married in St. Margaret's Church, Kinning Park on Dec 14 1899
She was shown as a domestic servant with parents Moses Downey & Margaret BLACK both deceased
to William PICKETT a Quay Labourer of 10 Maclean Street, Govan
Witnesses were Edward BRADLEY & Sarah BARRON

They are living with William's father in Govan in 1901
and had at least six children by 1912

Wow!  I had no idea the Downey family moved to Greenock.  The only child that appears in the Census was Anne and I was assuming Mary died in Ireland.  The Edward Bradley witness to the marriage was her half brother.  I understand what you mean regarding trees, I always check and look for the paper trail.

Brilliant find myluck.  Thank you very much.   :D
