maybe...

"Esther Ann Earl (30) of 1 West Street, Osney. Esther was born in Oxford in 1850/1, the son of Samuel Earl and his wife Sarah. At the time of the 1881 census when she was aged 20 she was living at 14 West Street with her parents and her older sister Harriet (20), who was a governess. Although her father was then himself an unemployed servant, they had the means to employ a servant girl of their own."

The bit you've quoted from is incorrect. If Esther was born 1850 she was 30 at the time of the 1881 census.

She was in fact at 14 West Street in 1871!

Albert Jenkins and family are there in 1881. The reference is RG 11 / 1504 / 58 / 61

Thanks for that help.

I am just trying to find out why Mary Ann Hanson, aged 8, had this address when she died and was buried at Oxford, St Frideswide in 24 Aug 1880.

Albert and Esther Jenkins were living there in 1881, but not in 1871.  Perhaps this was just a rented house.

Any ideas how I could find out who was living there in 1880?  Her mother, Mary Beesley came from Oxford, but the family were moving around a lot, father Alfred worked for the railways. In 1879 a son is born in Brinton, Warwks, and in 1881 a daughter was born in Hammersmith, London.
