I don't think Elizabeth McHutcheon/McCutcheon is the mother of the David Blane you are researching , Brigidmac.
It's looking more likely that the illegitimate son of Euphemia/Elspeth Blane could be more likely.
David's death registration might settle the problem of identity.

In the next household to the Alexanders with David McBlane on the 1841 Census  - there is another family of Alexanders headed by
Margaret (transcribed as Margt)  Alexander aged 35   Muslin Sewer
with children -
 Jean Alexander        age 8
Elizabeth Alexander   age 6
Margaret Alexander   age 4
John Alexander         age 1
Alexr Bowman           age 11 months
All born Ayrshire

Could 4 year old Margaret be the 14 year old lodger with Euphemia Blane & Thomas Brown on the 1851?

Looby :)

Thanks so much ...we.ll get to the bottom of this
I.ll head back to SP and try for that pesky death cert .it would probably help if i knew their religion too .

I may  be a while !! Its very slow going it was much easier to use SP 5 years ago

Blacksmith and shoemaker seemed a good link too

Ive never heard of Kate being short for Isabella ..

If you go on to Scotlands People and search David Blain from 1892 -1892 you will find a death in Shettleston David Blain age 60 ref/number 622/2/87 that will let you know the name of his mother

Thanks found death may 11th 1892
David Blain

So he is described as shoemaker journeyman
Married to Isabella Clyde
Illegitimate
Mother was Euphemia Blane farmworker deceased

Bonus his death notified by son in law william w stevenson my gg grandfather

I need exact spellings to find his wife or mothers deaths

Maybe janet blane age 60 in the 1841 census was his grandmother
Is Elspeth an alternative name for Euphemia a misstranscription or a different person ?

No problem , Brigidmac - enjoyed browsing FreeCen & FamilySearch.
Hope the info has been of help.
Re - John Blane/Elizabeth McHutcheon/McCutcheon and their large family who are missing on 1851 Census  - I have a feeling this family left Scotland for Canada . There are deaths in Ontario of a Stewart Blain born in 1826 Scotland (died 1901) and a David Blain born 1832 Ayr, Scotland (died 1909). These fit with the boys on the 1841 Census.

Great that you've got his death and solved the mystery. Janet Blane on 1841 very likely his grandmother, although Elspeth could have been living with another relative.
Euphemia/Elspeth - yes, they are the same person in my opinion.  Odd as it may seem, I have come across the names being interchangeable before .
Euphemia is usually shortened to Effie or Phemie...and I've seen Elizabeth/Elspeth.
But I think in this case Elspeth Blane is Euphemia Blane ::)
