Great find loopy it could be him .i wonder if Euphemia took either of her sons father to court for paternity

Rosie ive just got details of that  maybole death sept 1896 Euphemia Mcblain
Outworker age 70 single
her father was peter mcblain Blacksmith
 mother margaret HAMILTON

I  think Elspeth could be a sister as there is a decade between ages

Not wanting to add to confusion, but wondering if who reported Euphemia's death made a mistake with her mother's first name?

There are births in Ayrshire at the right time to fit for Euphemia's siblings to a Peter Blain or McBlain and a JANET Hamilton.

Janet you already had down as a possible maternal grandmother to David from Looby's earlier census details.

Maybe janet blane age 60 in the 1841 census was his grandmother
Is Elspeth an alternative name for Euphemia a misstranscription or a different person ?

This is always a great site to double check first name variants www.whatsinaname.net/

Elspeth and Euphemia are different names and not variants of each other.

Agreed Monica  ;D - the names are different and not variants of each other. You would expect Elizabeth/Elspeth and Euphemia/Effy/ Effie.

However - I have come across the two names being interchanged before  :-\
Indeed a quick Google search throws up a few examples.
I still think the 1841 Census result Elspeth Blane with the child Thomas Brown is the same woman on 1851 Census Euphemia Blain with child Thomas Brown. Her age may be out too - but when were ages on  1841 Census reliable (even taking the rounding down into account) ?
Not to say I'm wrong and she is there - but I can't see another woman on 1841 Census who could be Euphemia.

Ive found some more children for Peter MCBLAIN and janet hamilton
There is one transcribed as Illn Mcblen aug 1811
I think this couldbe Elspeth ....no reason why she couldnt be looking after her sisters toddler but as you said where was Euphemia ...i hadnt tried putting Effy spelling in any searches but will do that now .

Euphemia had a sister called Enaple  b 1802 .i suppose its a version of Anabel

I wish i could work out how to get on page of deaths for a parish and surname on SP the family were in Maybole in 1850.s

Euphemias son Thomas Brown was baptised fathers name given as james Brown  seems to have remained  single  and a shoemaker but may have died in a poorhouse .

Didnt find any court orders  for childmaintenance
