Thomas McDermott - Born Poplar 1871
« on: Friday 12 April 19 13:23 BST (UK) »
Hi researching my family history and drawn a blank on this ancestor. he had a brother named Hiram, I was hoping that a kind of unusual name like that might draw up some clues, but nothing.  I would love to know more about this side of the family

I don't have his wifes name or family, but know he had two children.  In one of the documents it claims he's a widower

I've got him around West Ham in 1899, he had two daughters.  After that nothing

If anyone can point out to me how to do dig a little deeper that would be great

Thanks

As I wrote in your other thread, it helps if you specify which documents you have your information from.
Is this Thomas born about 1871 with brother Hiram (abt 1862) and siblings and parents Peter and Ellen.

Hi.  That's the fellow.  I have some census reports and just family history.

I just really want to know how to find out who he married, and look down that line. As a moment that's a dead end for me

Advice and step by step guides on these websites.
Tracing Your English and Welsh Ancestors       www.ancestor-search.info/home.htm
BYU Discovering English Ancestors  (BYU is Brigham Young University i.e. Mormon university, so Family Search website is referred to a lot.) See topics Civil Registration and Church Records.

If you know the names and approximate birth years of the 2 daughters you can search for their birth registrations on GRO or Free BMD and find out mother's maiden surname.  Having got the correct surname or a shortlist, you can begin to search for likely marriages.
Marriage certificate or entry in church marriage register should include names of fathers of groom and bride and their occupations.

A search on GRO site for birth registrations of children, selecting phonetic option for surname and name derivatives option for forename,  using estimated year of birth on census + or - 2 years found these registrations:
McDermott, Hiram, mother's maiden surname McDonald, GRO ref. 1861 September Quarter Colchester
 Volume 04A page 244
McDermott, Beatrice, mother's maiden surname McDonnall, GRO Ref. 1875 September Quarter Luton
Vol. 03B p. 424. Occasional copy A.

As Thomas was born around 1871 I assume he had the same mother as Hiram and Beatrice. His place of birth on 1881 census was Gosport, Hampshire. Which record has birthplace Poplar? The children on 1881 census were all born in different places.  Search for Thomas on GRO births index, 1871 + or - 2 years , add mother's maiden surname McDonald, selecting phonetic or similar sounding option, and leave registration district blank.
You need to register on GRO site before you can search.

Colin

I hope someone can find this family. There are a few Thomas McDermott marriages but none seem to match up.
1911 - the family are MacDermott.
