I have just noticed that in the 1871 Census it looks like Robert Edward REES is living in the same house as John BRAWN father of Roberts wife Esther.
The BRAWN family members are given as:
John BRAWN Head b 1799 Sandhurst, Gloucester
Ann  Wife b 1805 Norfolk, Runton
Eliza Dau b 1830 Ireland
Anselm Son b 1846 Hereford

So it looks like Absalom was named after a BRAWN family member but called Absalom to avoid confusion maybe?

Can anyone find the BRAWNs in 1881?

So... it’s been a while but I am still searching!

Can anyone advise on what to do next?
Firstly, other than this reply which will bump my post, should I do anything else on here to get more people to look into this again?

Is there a method to work through when someone is missing from a census?
What other possibilities are there other than mis-transcribing -
Abstention?
Moved abroad?
Went to sea (he was a ships carpenter)?

I think the family were in Gloucester in 1876 and in 1886 for the birth of children William Edwin and Mary Ann but there is a 10 year gap.

I haven’t found a baptism yet for Mary Ann to find an address but I have found the baptism of William Edwin Rees in Gloucester St James on 27 Feb 1876.

Gloucestershire Anglican Parish Registers

Fathers name was written as Anselm but then crossed out & replaced with Robert Edward.
Could either a young Absalom/Hancel Henry Rees or Esther Brawns brother Anselm Brawn have been present and confused the clerk??

Their address is given as Back Terrace.

I have searched page by page through the Back Terrace & Barbican Road (resident in 1889) address pages of the 1881 census for Gloucester Barton St Michael but couldn’t see any names that could have been mis-transcribed from Rees.

I have also tried to search the 1881 census for the other Rees children with MMN of Brawn mentioned previously - Mary Ann and Susanna, who were born near Neath, but without success.

I would also like to find Esthers brother Anselm Brawn b1845 in the 1881 census as I can’t find him either.

Any more help gratefully received!

Purchase of Mary Ann's birth certificate will give you the address in 1886.  You can order direct from GRO and pay only £7.00 for a .pdf copy.

Mary Ann Rees - September quarter 1886 - Gloucester Registration District, Volume No: 6a, page 277.

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You will need to register.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.
