Elsie Edmunson (b. 1898 Gateshead)
« on: Saturday 13 April 19 16:53 BST (UK) »
Elsie was registered in Gateshead in 1898 and on the gro.gov website there is no mother's maiden name.  Edmunson is her registered name but she turns up in 1901 as Edminson and in 1911 as Edminton.  Her school records give her birthdate as 5 January 1898

I am in the process of getting her birth certificate to find her parents (as I can't find a baptism either) but I am more interested in her after 1911.

She was the 'adopted' daughter of Edwin Scotter and second wife, Mary (nee Cran).

She is with Edwin and Mary in 1901 as a Boarder (Class: RG13; Piece: 4786; Folio: 99; Page: 2) and with them again in 1911 as their adopted daughter (Class: RG14; Piece: 30561)

I can't see a marriage or a death, so any help gratefully received  :)

Thank you

Although the school record shows her birthdate as 5.1.1898 it may be as well to wait for the birth cert to confirm it

Once confirmed - try matching the birthdate with an Elsie on the 1939 register and then looking for a marriage under whatever surname is shown in 1939

Have you checked in case she was sent to Canada post 1911

Have you considered whether she may have taken the name of her adoptive parents and married or died as Elsie Scotter?

Hi

Yes, I've tried Scotter.  There are a few Elsie Scotter's floating around and some are Edwin's nieces and other relatives.

Hi

I hadn't thought of Canada to be honest but its worth a go.  I am wondering if she was a foundling with no mother mentioned on the GRO

Freebmd has a 1920 marriage in Hartlepool Elsie Edmundson to Hubert J Welsh.  Might be worth investigating

Plus three children in Hartlepool 1920, 1922, 1923.  They may have emigrated to Australia; at any rate a Hubert Welsh (34, compositor) with a Hartlepool address sailed to Brisbane in August 1925. Future permanent residence: Australia.

Actually Elsie and the three children were on the same ship under a different ticket number - the Sophocles, which sailed from London on 13 August 1825.

There is a report of the Elsie Edmundson/Hubert Welsh marriage in the Hartlepool Northern Dail Mail of 11th February 1920, in which it states that Elsie was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Edmundson of Carlton Street (Hartlepool).

Maids of Honour were Gladys and Muriel Edmundson, bridesmaid Doris Edmundson, groomsman N. Edmundson.

This family appear to be all together in Hartlepool in 1911.
