James White
« on: Monday 15 April 19 07:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone please assist me in finding information on James White my gg grandfather.

James White was born in Sussex in 1805 - I don't know his parentage.

In 1829 he married Sarah Forester in Boxgrove Sussex. They had two children Frances (Fanny) born 1829 who was possibly Christened in Westhampnett, Sussex and Charlotte Christened at Tillington, Sussex, England 1831.  Frances and Charlotte arrived in South Australia in 1846/1847. I cannot find what happened to their parents or how they managed to get to Australia. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards from Australia.

Wow, that looks promising. I have wondered if James White may have come to Australia as a convict?? Girls sent to the Poor House were also transported to Australia as servants. It is really hard because in many cases the children were never identified either as simply passengers accompanying their parents , as children of convicts or girls being transported under the "Earl Grey"scheme of taking them out of the Poor Houses and shipping them off to the colonies.
Many thanks for your assistance it is really appreciated.

Where did you find Frances and Charlotte arrival, they don't appear on any shipping list to SA.

Just in case he’s related, you may wish to make a note of the John White b abt 1803 Eartham who is in Eartham with wife Louisa and family in 1851: HO107/1652/347/18.

They are very much in the geographical zone of your Whites - their son William was born in Boxgrove c1836 according to the 1851 census.  They also named one of their daughters Charlotte.

They are living at Selhurst Park, Eartham in 1841: HO107/1100 book 5 folio 8 page 21.
