UK female similar..

I remember comimg across a burial register entry for a stranger to the parish where the clergyman carefully drew the tattoo found on the woman's arm, in the hope that someone might come looking for her and recognise her.

Unfortunately there was no hint of a name being added later.

In Foulness (Or Wakering, Leigh On Sea) I found a burial of an unknown man who had a "William Rogers" tattoo on his arm. That note was added in the register. Whether the man was William Rogers or had a best friend, close relative or idolised a William Rogers is unknown.

Re replies 10 & 11. Isn't that one of the reasons sailors had tattoos?

Isn't it rather good to think that even totally unknown they were properly buried, and recorded in some way? I've seen entries of unknowns where the person writing the register has tried to include further scraps of information, and sometimes they must have led eventually to identification of the deceased?

This chap was buried as an unknown, drowned in the Thames, in 1896.  I like that they took the trouble to give him his proper identity, which wasn't established until two days after the burial.

Great that they went to the trouble of finding his name..

~Which reminded me of a TV programme about Bodies being found in the River Thames.. and how often they are UNKNOWN that is even today..

  I have just come across 2 burials the same day in a local church register. "Man, known as Henry Smith" and "Man, known as C.Wood." They were both navvies employed on railway building, so I guess they died in an accident. Both age unknown.
