Waldron / Hayward / Brain of Marlborough, Wiltshire 1700s/1800s
« on: Friday 19 April 19 15:20 BST (UK) »
Richard Waldron married Sarah Hayward at St Mary, Marlborough 24 Oxctober 1811.
We have no other data on them - parents, siblings, birth, death etc all welcome.
When their daughter (any siblings?) Sarah Hayward Waldron 1812-1871 married George Wells 1800-1876 at Clerkenwell 20 March 1837, a witness was William Brain: three of their children later got the middle name Brain. Would he be a relative?
Thanks for any help however slight!
Mike

The only birth I could find was the one you know.

Sarah Hayward Waldron
18 Oct 1812
St Mary, Marlborough, Wiltshire
Richd. Waldron & Sarah

I did find the following burials, this would make Sarah for the above birth age 43 and marriage at 42 assuming the age at death was right.

Sarah Waldron age 53 (1769)
Burial 31 May 1822
Marlborough, St Mary the Virgin, Wiltshire,

Richard Waldron age 53 (1773)
Burial 29 Jul 1831
Marlborough, St Mary the Virgin,  Wiltshire

Thanks Colin.

I think the birth year for Richard should be 1778, making him an unusual 9 years younger than Sarah. Both are feasible as Sarah H W's parents in 1812 but Sarah would not be a young mother, as you say.

Given how frequently families recycled particular names, I suppose I should be cautious in assigning these as parents until some extra evidence emerges?

Marriage witness William Brain doesn't have any connection to the Wells side that we've found, so he's more likely to be Wiltshire like the Waldrons I think, but I've found no trace of him.

Hi
On the marriage licence Richard is a baker.
His bondsman is Joseph Awdry cornfacter.

Richard was balloted to serve in the militia in 1804.So between 15-50 then.
In 1822 he is the Pigot's Directory as a baker The Green

Other Waldrons in Marlborough
John died 1832 Admin to daughter Sarah wife of John Dangerfield .

Not a lot there I'm afraid.

Thanks Ciderdrinker.
Could you just confirm this 1811 marriage bond of baker RW is to a Sarah Hayward?
Thanks,
Mike

Great, thanks,
The burials that Colin found of a Sarah and a Richard, previous to Sarah H W's 1837 marriage in Clerkenwell, I think are more likely than not to have been her parents: why else marry in Clerkenwell London and not in Marlborough?
Perhaps she was living with a guardian or working in London, not having reason to stay in Marlborough? Seems uncommon for women not to marry in their home place.
Comments welcome?

Hi Mike,
Hope this does not confuse the issue too much.

The only birth for Richard I cannot eliminate below.

Richard Waldron 20 May 1774 Lambourn Berkshire, Parents John Waldron & Sarah Henley
They married in Lambourn 27 Apr 1770. Other children Mary 1779 & Sarah 1781.

Sarah Hayward   Baptism   14 Sep 1772   Marlborough, St Mary the Virgin   William & Mary

However she appears on the 1841 census. I just wonder if Sarah married a Hayward, there were a number of possibilities.

The only Brain connection I can make below.

William Waldron married Mary Brain 29 Sep 1794 Leigh, Wiltshire.

A William Waldron baptised 09 Mar 1777 Lambourn, Berkshire, parents William & Elizabeth. I cannot find one in Wiltshire in the period?

William Waldron married Elizabeth Gilmore 23/05/1774 Lambourn. Might he be related to John father of Richard?

There were a couple of William Brains born Wiltshire. Others earlier & later

William Brain   Baptism   11 May 1787   Ashton Keynes   William & Mary

William Brain   Baptism   23 May 1784   Leigh   Hugh & Mary

1841  Ashton Keynes    Age
William Brain   55
Sarah Brain   35
Emma Brain   5
Thomas Brain   2
Elizabeth Brain   5 Mo

There is also a William Brain age 25 (1816), a servant not born in County. He is at the Bell & Hounds, but not clear, pub in Kensington. The publicans surname is not clear John ?? 60 not born in County.

Plenty of others elsewhere.
