What I cannot get around is the fact that he joined the East Lancs regiment....if he and his father were born in London !!!!

Don't think this is uncommon (though i'm not a military expert) I have two chaps in my family born London as were their parents, and one served with the East Lancs and one in the Northumberland Fuseliers.

Probably a red herring, but in 1871 there is a John J? Stanley, 4 son b. Hythe Kent with a father John who is a military chap and living in what seems to be a military facility at Hythe.  Sorry am having some computer problems but if it's of interest perhaps someone else can look it up for you.

Jonathan

Thanks. I have access to the 1871 Census.

99.9% certain that neither of them had a middle name.

Not 100% sure, but think there is a St Lukes in Chelsea - is this a possible
STANLEY  John Reuben     St Luke  1b 594  in June 1864
or there is
STANLEY  John     Whitechapel  1c 407  March 1866
If you aren't familiar with London (and I am not) Jonathon will know if either are possibles.
I agree too with Jonathon - I have rellies that are in the services but nowhere near their home towns - guess a lot depended on what they wanted to do in the army as to where they went for training and work.

Sue,

You are right St Lukes is Chelsea.

First is not possible as John Stanley did not have a middle name.

Whitechappel would fit nicely, the only issue isits East London and Chelsea is West London. But I will not rule it out until I can be sure he was not able to register the birth there for whatever reason.

Maybe the local regiment idea had died out by this time, but I am sure it was a standard practice in the British Army.
