Where is he buried?
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 13:27 BST (UK) »
Hello,
William Jowett was born in Mellor, Derbyshire, 11/10/1862 and died there 12/08/1923. He married Effie Jean Smith in Bristol, 14/02/1900.
I wish to find details of William's burial....where, when, grave inscription and hopefully, to obtain a photo of his headstone. It appears he was not buried in St Thomas, Mellor, churchyard.
William was associated with the wadding manufacturing industry in Mellor.
Would appreciate any information.

Did you check family announcements in the local newspaper.
They will often list place of burial.

There is a newspaper article in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph 18 August 1923 "The funeral of the late Mr. William Jowett at Mellor Church yesterday was of a most impressive character".

I will look to see if there is anything else in the newspapers.

I can't see anything else regarding his burial.  There are several articles reporting his death, this is the most detailed one...

Thanks again, Jool, this is interesting but unfortunately it doesn't help me find the information I want. I have a fairly comprehensive family history for him, but no details about his burial.

And, Pauline, thanks.....the Mellor "local newspaper" would probably have been  a good source of information, but I don't know which newspaper this would have been...in 1923. The Sheffield Daily Telegraph seems an unlikely one. I can't be sure that the church which conducted his funeral service was, in fact, St Thomas. One record I found says he's not buried in their cemetery.

I thought that somebody who's researched the Jowetts might have something to offer on him. We'll see.

Thanks again.

The article I posted earlier was also reported in the Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal, maybe that was their "local newspaper".

There's some material on William Jowett in the Marple Local History Society Archives, including a lengthy but hard-to-read press cutting, at http://www.marplelocalhistorysociety.org.uk/archives/items/show/1321

Given his lifelong connection with Mellor, and the fact that he was a keen churchman and patron of the parish church, it seems very hard to imagine that he would have been buried anywhere else. However, burial records for that period seem not to be available online.

I can't be sure that the church which conducted his funeral service was, in fact, St Thomas. One record I found says he's not buried in their cemetery.

I don't think there's any other church in Mellor. And what's the record that says he's not buried there? Does it say that he's definitely not buried there, or is it that no-one has found him yet?
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
