Bell Shareout Club, Cambridge
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 14:37 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a 1917 funeral notice for Arthur Stevenson a porter at the Correspondence College, Cambridge. He was a member of the "Bell Shareout Club" and 4 of his pallbearers were from that club (Witt, Hamner, Ward & Miller).
I cannot find any references to this club. Can anyone help?
Regards
Dennis Richards

Most likely reference to a pub savings scheme. There were at least three taverns in Cambridge named The Bell around that time. Members would set aside a regular amount every week to cover the cost of a goose at Christmas for example.
CORNWELLs (and variants) with origins in the ancient county of Cambridgeshire & Isle of Ely - any date.

This is most interesting. Reminds me of the Green Shield Stamps my Mother used to collect
when I was a child.  :)

In 1911 Arthur lived in Newmarket Road, there is a Bell Inn also in Newmarket Road, so there might be a connection.

These clubs under a variety of names were very common. They really lasted into the 1960 s when the generation that had supported them began to pass on.
Ayres Brignell Cornwell Harvey Shipp  Stimpson Stubbings (all Cambs) Baumber Baxter Burton Ethards Proctor Stanton (all Lincs) Luffman (all counties)
