William Bisset
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 18:07 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can help me with this man.  William Bisset was born approx 1823/1827 and married a Jane McNaught.  They had 5 children from 1851 onwards.  I have found them all in Closeburn or Lochrutton Dumfrieshire.  I have also found census from 1861,1871,1881,1891 for Jane Bisset nee McNaught.  Now on the 1861 and 1871 census she is recorded as married to William a farm servant but he is not in the household. On the 1881 and 1891 she is recorded as widowed.  I have been unable to find a Birth marriage or death of this man.  I have found Jane Bisset McNaught's demise in 1892.  Couldn't find 1841 or 1851 census for either of them.  Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Eileen

William and Jane's daughter Agnes was born in 1855 ( 17 February 1855 LOCHRUTTON, KIRKCUDBRIGHT). The first year of Scottish official registration. BMD certs ran over two pages of the register and included more info that year than any other. By 1856, it had been reduced to one page.

This cert should let you confirm the marriage date. It will also provide ages and and place of birth for parents and how many children they'd had (boys/girls, alive/deceased).

Worth looking at for further details.

Hi,

There is a 10 year old William Bisset living in Closeburn on the 1841 Census.
Address Croalchaple
George Bisset aged 45 , an agricultural labourer
Agness Bisset aged 45
Mary Bisset    aged 27
Thomas Bisset aged 16
William Bisset aged 10
George Bisset aged 7
Andrew Bisset aged 4
Sarah Carruthers aged 80   Inmate ???

All born in Dumfrieshire.
This William is 5 years too young compared with the William on the 1851.....His age could be rounded down from 14 ?? Yet his siblings ages haven't been rounded down.

Looby

No sign of either William in 1851:

George Bessit 61 carpenter b. Morton, Dumfriesshire
Agness Bessit 61 b. Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire
Mary Bessit 41 daughter
Sarah Bessit 39 daughter
George Bessit 19 son
Andrew Bessit 14 son
Agness Ried 8 grandchild
Margaret Bissit 4 grandchild
David Burns 21 son in law

Address: Croalchaple Closeburn

Could be an error showing William as 10 in 1841?

Could be, Monica.
Or perhaps that age of 10 is a mis-transciption  :-\
