No sign of either William in 1851:

George Bessit 61 carpenter b. Morton, Dumfriesshire
Agness Bessit 61 b. Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire
Mary Bessit 41 daughter
Sarah Bessit 39 daughter
George Bessit 19 son
Andrew Bessit 14 son
Agness Ried 8 grandchild
Margaret Bissit 4 grandchild
David Burns 21 son in law

Address: Croalchaple Closeburn

Could be an error showing William as 10 in 1841?

Monica

Yes. could be....George and Mary's ages not consistent either. Poor Mary has aged 14 years since 1841 ::)

Looby :)

A possible for William in 1861:

William Bessett 35 ploughman b. Closeburn
Address: Nether Dargavel, Dumfrieshire

In this listing is a Robert Gibson who shows as Farm Manager Of 300 Acres Employing 4 Men 3 Women.

1871 and there is this entry:

William Brisset 40 labourer b. Closeburn
Mary Brisset 33 b. Dumfries
Mary Jane Brisset 8 months b. Kilmarnock

Address: 2 Mill Lane, Kilmarnock

Mary Jane's birth index entry shows as:

Mary Jane Bisset
Birth 28 Jul 1870 KILMARNOCK, AYR
Father's Name William Bisset
Mother's Name Mary Murray

Can't see a marriage for this couple. The birth cert for Mary Jane should add details.

Given that Jane and William only show together in 1851 and their last child John was born in 1858, it may well be that they did not live together after this date. William could have taken up with another woman...

Thank you all for your assistance.  Monica you asked about Jane McNaught's parents they were John and Helen nee Inglis.  Jane on the  1861 census 1871 census recorded she was married but no William so presumably they were separated.  I think the William Bessett Ploughman age 35 on 1861 census.  Will look for Agnes's birth certificate tomorrow.  Agnes married Alexander Stoba and went south of the border to Bury Lancashire.  Did anyone manage to find a death for William as Jane on the 1861 and 1871 census she is recorded as married to William a farm servant but he is not in the household. On the 1881 and 1891 she is recorded as widowed.

Thank you all I will look into them all. Eileen

Thanks for confirmation on Jane's parents. I can see possible siblings for her in Lochrutton. Note that spelling variants for her surname bring up McNight. With that type of surname, you can use the wild card to search as Mcn*t.

Her entry could be this one:

Jean MCNIGHT
Parent JOHN MCNIGHT/
08/06/1816
875/10 112
Lochrutton

Jane and Jean are common first name variants.

Not sure how consistent her age was through the censuses or as reported at her death.

There is a William Bisset dies in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in 1873.

Scotlands People ref : 597/578.  The death registration can be viewed on Scotlands People if you purchase credits

This man is recorded as 36 years old - therefore year of birth circa 1837 . This is too young to be the man on the 1851 Census. However ages with the Bissets have not been consistent and the informant of his death may not have known what age William was and guessed.

That is a good find, Looby  :)

Would work with that possible 1871 census entry we have above...even though ages are variable!

Her 1851 census entry gives her a birth year of 1822-23. Likely age up and down over the years on the censuses!
