Note in 1784 burial records

Here's a snip from Ancestry's burial records for Sandford on Thames, Oxfordshire in 1784.

Elizabeth might be my ancestor, but I can't make out the additional line of writing between her entry and the next.  Something about '........ Duty ...................... Oct^r 12 1785'

I think the first few words are 'Inspected and duty received....'

The third word looks like reced but there seems to be a contraction mark over it which might make it into 'received' 

A little further on I can see the word 'cross' and before the date possibly C Bennet

I can't add to JenB's work, except to wonder if the duty refers to tax for not being buried in woollen (the laws were passed 1666-80 but I had thought they were largely ignored by the late 1700s).

It might be payment of duty under the Stamp Duties act of 1783.

The next two entries are marked 'P' which indicates that they were paupers and thus exempt from the duty.

The note might not apply exclusively to Elizabeth, but might simply mean that the record had been inspected and duty received up to that particular date

I was so hung up on extracting clues from the tiny writing that I completely missed the 'P' notation on the other lines

Off now to have a word with myself.  Elizabeth remains a mystery.

Once again, a Rootschatter adds to my knowledge.  Thank you, JenB, - I hadn't heard of the 1783 Stamp Dutis Act before.  I wonder if there was an increase in the number of paupers and a decrease in the number of baptisms while it was in force.
