   Mother Elizabeth Piercy or Pearson b 1770 Douglas d 1851/1855
   Married 1787

    James married Elisabeth Balfour 1825 in Coylton
    Recorded as a pauper 1851 Census
    Elisabeth died 1867 as a widow
    Unable to find him 1861 Census

There are 3 deaths in Ayrshire in 1862 and 2 in 1860 all listed with no ages shown.  Have you already checked them out?

2 Elizabeth Martin deaths 1867 - which one was she?  Dreghorn  or Kilwinning

    Have searched Scotlands People for death without success.

     The 1860 deaths are a child and a 33 year old farmer.

      The 1862 deaths are 2 children and a widower.

       Wife Elisabeth's death in 1867 is in Dreghorn.

       Wondered if he died in poorhouse but thought it would probably have been in Ayrshire

Whilst you have been unable to find James, have you tried to look for Elizabeth by herself in 1861? It would let you confirm her marital status and help you narrow down James's death further.

If he was described as a pauper in the 1851 census, this almost certainly means that he was receiving relief from the Parochial Board, the committee responsible for administering the Poor Law after 1845. If so, the Board's records would have collected a lot of detail about his family circumstances, and would have noted his death when it occurred.

The big question is whether or not these records have survived. If they have, they should be in the care of Ayrshire Archives http://www.ayrshirearchives.org.uk/ or if not the Archives should know where they are. So I suggest that you contact them.

Elizabeth Balfour likely a widow by 1861 in Dreghorn:

Archibald Martin 19 son miner b. Coylton

Son Robert married in 1857? His marriage cert should show whether father James was alive or deceased at the time of his marriage.
