Danish Probate Record 1815-1816 - Translation
« on: Saturday 11 May 19 03:32 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've had some fantastic help last year from Ian re: Danish translations.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=795441.0

He pointed me to the Probate record for my Ancestor, Claus Sorensen Bak:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=16967859#220487,41563287

The middle record on the right.

Claus was from Vestero, Laeso (Island) , Hjorring County. His son Anders Gaarn Clausen Bak is my 3xgt-grandfather.

I'm eager to decipher Claus' probate to see if it can clear up when and where he actually died.

Notes: His wife gave birth to an illegitimate daughter in 1809, by her fiance (though the marriage ultimately never took place). The wife died in 1816, and her probate named her late spouse as: CLAUS SØRENSEN BAK as well as their 3 children and her illegitimate daughter.  The last 'live sighting' of Claus is in the 1801 Census with his wife and children  and their last child was born May 1802.

My mystery is: Did he die between 1801 and 1809? Or did he part ways with the wife, and die 1815-1816? I can't find a burial for him in Vestero either way.

Many thanks for all help.

Cheers,

I made a mistake earlier as the record was not his probate but his estate.

Hi

Some more great help from Denmark......

Here is his probate - top left:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ns1/

The first row says:
"Year 1815 Dec.9th the probate after the late Claus Sörensen Bak of Westerø after previous announcement at the cemetary on the island on last Sunday (Dec.3) was performed....."

There is no mention of when he died or was buried. He probably died at sea.

On the previous page there is a record:
http://ao.sa.dk/ao/data.ashx?bid=32587007 - bottom right

"On Dec 5 1815 it was announced that Hans Kragenæs of Westerø on Oct 22 had gone to sea in a boat together with 2 men to sail to Asaa, and nothing had been heard from them since."

Claus could well have been with them.

and more help from Denmark:

This is Magrethe Andersdatter Gaarn's probate:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ns8/

Claus died in December 1815 but is not recorded in any church record.
It looks as though they were quite wealthy.
