Robert Wissett, blacksmith and family
« on: Sunday 12 May 19 14:25 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on Robert Wissett, blacksmith, (possibly born in 1718) died and buried in 1766, Lavenham and his family. I know he had at least two sons Robert (he could be of the East India Co but can't confirm this) and Henry, clockmaker, who died 1786 (married Ann Childs 1768 had daughter Anne-second wife Mary Burch, married 1777). He had at least one daughter, Martha (married Samuel Rutter-can't find this marriage) who died 1793. Robert Sr's second wife was Elizabeth Watson (married in 1765) but she was not the mother of Robert, Henry or Martha because of the marriage date. All three children and Elizabeth are mentioned in his will found in the Suffolk Archives.  I can't find any birth/baptismal record of the three children mentioned. I have information on Henry's daughter Anne and her children but am interested pushing the tree back, especially Robert Sr and his children. Henry is my direct ancestor but any information would be helpful. Thanks!

I found a Robert Wissett marriage in the Lavenham registers but going by the date, it's probably Robert Jnr

Robert Wissett (s) and Sarah Polly (s)
BOTP
Married by licence 8th February 1763
In presence of Thos Tiffen and John Longwood

Like you, I couldn't find the baptisms there of Robert Wissett Snr's children Robert, Henry and Martha.

There is a marriage in Lavenham in 1712 between a Robert Wissett and a Martha Barfield. Seeing as your Robert called his daughter Martha could this couple be his parents? Just a thought.

The year and name certainly seem about right (he was born in 1689). Thanks very much!

Thanks for the blacksmiths link (no luck sadly on his name) and the marriage information. Elizabeth was his second wife. I am still working on Robert and Sarah.

Sorry but I’m a bit confused...which Robert was born in 1689 and which in 1712?

Which one is the blacksmith?

Could you please list the names and dates of those you already have?

Thanks,

Jo  :)
