How exciting jcmac!  :)

I have been looking at Thorburns in NSW and note that several have associations with surnames beginning with Mc so it appears to be a surname with Scottish connections despite my earlier thoughts. There are also many of them on SP indexes.

Ideally you would purchase his death certificate to find out his parent's names, however I believe that you need to supply names and surnames of parents and other details in order for them to issue the d/c. I don't know if there is any way around this ... presumably your friend would also like to know if he married and/or had other children?

The Index to Statutory Registers (Births) in the Scotlandspeople website gives 8 returns to D.Thorburn b.1926/27 (2 in 1926; 6 in1927 - with only 3 D's and 1 DS).
Trying only Thorburn b.1926/27 gives 53 returns with 2 in Old or West Kilpatrick, one of which is early 1927 (entry 4) for James McD M Bro Thorburn.
You can use the search facility yourself at no cost.

There are some James Thorburns on the UK Electoral Registers. One in Clydebank in 2003/2010 caught my eye, but he was born 1960/62 - probably a red herring. There are some in Glasgow, some give years of birth and some don't.

Judith, how sure is your source that James was born in NSW?

Scotlandspeople has a Death registration for 2015 Dumbarton 505 entry 456
James McDowall Thorburn age 88 mother's maiden surname Melvin.
Looks like a good possibility.

Thanks guys. I was having a day off the computer to unfry my brain. I will go though all of your suggestions in the next few days. The death of James is interesting, I have on my tree father David James Hamilton Thorburn and mother Agnes Melvin! For me at this stage, parents are important, so the news of the death in 2015 is amazing. SI.L. sent me this the other day..... :D

David Thorburn /Agnes Melvin marriage 1918 Blythswood, Glasgow.
Searching Scotlandspeople for:-
Births/Thorburn/Both sex/1918-1930/Old Kilpatrick brings up 7 results.
Can you identify any who might link with what you already know ?

(As an aside I can see at least one child in funeral notice (Who May Still Be Alive) who is listed under their second name).
