William The Lion, King of Scotland
« on: Tuesday 14 May 19 13:19 BST (UK) »
After doing my best to research my family tree, I've come to William The Lion, the first royal (if I've done it correctly) in my family tree.

Is he on anybody else's family tree? It would be very interesting to know!

How on earth do you actually prove your Ancestry so far back???

I would love to know the secret and what records you have Kim2000.

Honestly, I can't say that any of it is right for certain. I've used Ancestry and they show up with 'potential mother' and 'potential father'.

In 1291 King Edward I of England was given the task of choosing the next king of Scotland from a field of 14 contenders. Robert Bruce and John Balliol were the only serious candidates and the others were just there to make up the numbers. One of the also-rans was a Patrick Galythly whose claim to fame was that his late father Henry Galythly or Galychtly was an illegitimate son of King William I, "William the Lion".

Galythly (etc.) is the surname which nowadays is spelt Gellatly or Gallitly, and if like me you have that name in your family-tree, I suppose with a bit of imagination you could claim to be a descendant of King William.

@ Harry, Comyn was also a contender, the three claimants were descended from female members of the royal house, the direct line having failed.   Baliol had the best claim but a big mistake inviting a wolf to judge the best lambs!  ;D
