William Coket Latin will - 1479
« on: Tuesday 14 May 19 13:58 BST (UK) »
Thanks in advance for to those that can decipher Latin wills.

This is the will of William Coket who was the rector of Great Livermere, he appeared as an extra in an earlier thread about Water Coklet & his will from 1482. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=811473.9

At this time I am just trying to sort out family groups and relationships so again I don''t need a full transcription just the important elements, ie:-

Date of will
Date of probate
Names
Occupations
Relationships

Edward
Scott - Lincolnshire
Jobson - Lincolnshire, Suffolk
Needham - Lincolnshire
Wayet - Lincolnshire

Edward, can you upload the will, or a link to it?
(I can't do it today in any case, but someone else might.)

Here are the very basics.  Bookbox may wish to add more in the fullness of time.

It was made on the day of Saint Wulstan (presumably Wulfstan is meant) which should be 19 January (unless St Wulfstan's feast day has changed since) in 1479.  It was proved on 7 February 1479.

Obviously these are Old Style dates.

He is described as clerk and Rector of the church of lyv(er)mer magna.

His executors are Master William ffynch(a)m, the rector of thelneth(a)m, and his brother Edward Coket.

I believe the only other name mentioned is that of Lord Robert Porte.

Thanks, does it say who got the money (assuming there was some)?

I'll start another topic later with the will (in latin) of Edward 1482 who I guess is the brother

This lot are starting to annoy me  ;)

I don't believe much money is specifically bequeathed.

He makes bequests to his church and to the poor.  I'd prefer not to elaborate further.

He appears to give Porte a pound.  Something follows this bequest but I'm not sure what it means.

Master William and his brother appear to be the residuary legatees.

Thanks again, this family seem quite consistent in paving their way to heaven in their wills  :)

It's normal for pre-Reformation wills.

I have one from around this time in which he writes two pages of "health of my soul, health of my parents' and friends' souls" stuff - then declines to name his children in the brief and only mention of their existence.

A few more details of the bequests ...

To the church at Great Livermere, 40 shillings for repairs
To the poor of Livermere, 10 measures of wheat and 10 measures of malt
To Lord Robert Porte, a book called pye [?] (unu(m) libru(m) voc(atum) pye) (I think ???)
To one priest to celebrate mass for my soul for one year, 8 marks
Residue to my executors to carry out deeds of piety for the good of my soul (etc.)

Also, his brother Edward Coket is ‘of Great Livermere’

Not much help, I’m afraid.
