Unable to make out Occupation
« on: Thursday 16 May 19 11:36 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Can someone please assist me in deciphering the highlighted occupation in the attached screen shot. It is from the 1861 England Census for Lancashire Chorlton upon Medlock District 27. I make it out as saying "Loader in Sugar". Thanks in advance for any help.

Joseph

Thomas and Matthew Keenan were indeed sugarhouse labourers ... you'll find them on my database at  www.mawer.clara.net/sugarkk.html .
They probably (no employee lists have survived) worked at that time for Binyon & Fryer in Chester St, that soon after became Fryer, Binyon & Forster.  www.mawer.clara.net/loc-manch.html .

It was not a pleasant job. In London the labourers in sugarhouses called themselves sugarbakers (from the German Zuckerbäcker) and you'll find an enlightening piece regarding the London conditions at  www.mawer.clara.net/greenwood.html . Manchester would not have been much different.
Almeroth, Germany (probably Hessen). Mawer, Softley, Johnson, Lancaster, Tatum, Bucknall (E.Yorks, Nfk, Lincs)
