Just to add to the confusion - the individual may have changed his name and or other details to William O'Brien b1900 on arrival in Australia.
My friend has taken a DNA test, could that help in sorting his ancestry out?

DNA could help if there are close enough matches or multiple matches with ancestors from a particular area of Ireland (or wherever his family was originally from).
