A wonderful FREE map resource
« on: Friday 17 May 19 15:01 BST (UK) »
I was looking for a very basic outline map of Durham, uncluttered by all the usual stuff, for my own annotations.  I found the following page which offers over 50 different designs, varying from totally blank via with/without rivers, roads, towns etc.

https://d-maps.com/pays.php?num_pay=1714&lang=en

From the main menu you are offered the continents of the world, and from increasingly detailed sub-menus you can select any geographical region you want, for example, down to state and county in the US.  Every map offers a free download in GIF, PDF, CDR, SVG, AI and WMF format.  (These are explained on Wikipedia).

https://d-maps.com/continent.php?num_con=2&lang=en

The pages can be configured to offer several different languages.  I could find no earlier mention of this site.

I'd  be interested to hear how people use these maps for their own uses.  These maps are much more user-friendly than selecting different base maps in Google Maps.

Coombs, if you go up 1-2-3 levels you zoom out to England - Europe- World.  It isn't just Durham.  I have lots of Hartlepool Wilsons.  Are any of yours from Hartlepool?

Thanks. I shall look at the maps.

None of my Wilsons came from Hartlepool as far as I know. Mine came from Lanchester and St Helen Auckland, West Auckland.

Fascinating! I love maps. Can anyone tell me from their local knowledge if these are the current County boundaries? They have been messed about rather in the last 40 years, but it looks as if the Unitary authorities are included.
I have a map of the U.K. on my kitchen door for the education of passing grandchildren, but it is a bit out of date.

The maps show the current boundaries, not the historical county boundaries. For example the map of Durham does not include Tyne & Wear, which is on a separate map. See the list at https://d-maps.com/continent.php?num_con=18&lang=en
You can see the historic boundaries on the map at http://www.gazetteer.org.uk/map.php you can zoom in as far as you like.

Having got on to the subject of counties past and present, I looked up Tyne and Wear. As I said, I knew they had been messed about, and this is what Wiki says about T and W!

"Tyne and Wear County Council was abolished in 1986, and so its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now unitary authorities. However, the metropolitan county continues to exist in law and as a geographic frame of reference, and as a ceremonial county."

I expect the same applies to all the "counties" invented in 1974, no wonder I am confused.

Fabulous.

I reckon it ought to be on every main board.   I started a thread about your thread on the Australia Board.
