Searching New Zealand BDM's In Person
« on: Sunday 19 May 19 12:41 BST (UK) »
Greetings from Scotland.

Just a general enquiry at the moment. We have family who moved from Scotland to North Island in the 1900's. Have quite a bit of information and photos of them from another family member.

My question is this - A young cousin is over in Auckland at the moment so is there anywhere she can go to check records in person?

We have places here in Scotland where you can do this e.g. Scotlandspeople, Mitchell Library.

Your help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi Dorrie,

To my knowledge NZ BDM's are all held in Wellington now and I haven't heard of anyone actually going there to research.
Maybe email them and ask them

Thank you very much for your reply Janette.

I will pass the email you gave me to my cousin.

Out of interest what information does a New Zealand death certificate give?

Thanks,

Here is a list of what you might expect to find on a death registration. We recommend getting a "printout" rather than a certificate.

It is only as good as the informant

Thanks again Janette.

I have taken a look at the 1st email address you gave me and have been able to confirm 3 of the records I was looking for. I will send for printouts as you suggest.

The others are for births less than 100 years ago so it looks as if I will not be able to get them online.

The last one is proving a bit of a problem but I will keep looking.

Thanks Mckha for that extra research information.

I think I will have to spend lots of time researching New Zealand Archives and Newspaper but if I can find the information on my family it will be worth it.

Morning Dorrie.

If your researcher is staying in Auckland for a period, a visit to the Auckland Branch of Archives NZ may be in order. It is located in the Auckland airport precinct. But first check out the on-line ARCHWAY to see if the records found, Wills, land deeds etc are held at that branch.

Auckland City Library have a good Family history section, and Auckland Museum also may hold records. Especially war service on CENOTAPH. If you are prepared to share a surname and location, members here in, have assess to school rolls and all manner of local resources to assist your search. Then there is Private Messaging if the finds get into the realm of the living.

Other members have a wealth of experience researching further south in NZ.

All the best,

Alan.
