Cannot read a name, record attatched..
« on: Tuesday 21 May 19 04:53 BST (UK) »
I cannot read all the birth record of this child, 'Mary or Catherine McEdin' Baptized May 23rd 1841.

The record is in Latin, well pig-latin because the author appears to put syllables onto names in order to make them appear as it.

I need the mother's surname.

Adding a dunce hat to my squished ego, it's written twice, apparently due to sponsor mixup, and one of the sponsors has it too.

I think it may be 'Leavy', ...ummm.

Any suggestions welcomed.

I read it as "Learry" which I think in today's world is "Leary"?

Thanks, that is a start. Here's some of the ways I tried, Leacy, Seary, could it be Ceasy? Whichever, re-examination leads me to suspect the author is feeble or drunk, because the first entry is clearly wrong but not crossed off, see the word, I think 'Catherine' where no attempt is made to cross the 't'.

Then the second mixes up bits of 'Bapti something with the end of Mir ....ampha' which is how they wrote Mary. Too the mother's first name is Mary, which led me to immediately chose the same for the child, as is the custom in this population.

Have to go scrutinize local records, Griffith Valuation, for hints ...

But still not making any sense out of the repeated scrawl, L or S or whatever it is, e, a, ?, y.

I think they had two children baptized at the same time, one being Catherine, and the other being Mary(?).  They chose different sponsors/godparents for each child.

I was about to say that the second daughter looks like Bridget* rather than Mary, so I  agree with Steve.

The r is distinctive in the other places so I would agree with Leavy.

I can see it now.  I was trying to make the B as the start of "Bapt" but then couldn't make a name to follow!
