Mary Jane Mavin 1857 - ?
« on: Tuesday 21 May 19 10:28 BST (UK) »
Mary Jane was the 5th (of 7) child of Joseph Robert Mavin (1821-1914), a shoemaker,  and his wife Jane, nee Grant (c1822-1894).

Parents and siblings are all sorted, I can trace them all apart from Mary Jane.

Mary J was born at Embleton in 1857, baptised at Embleton Parish Church 22 March 1857.

1861 Embleton age 6, with parents  (Piece3881, Folio43, Page15)
1871 not with the family but, age 14, working as a general servant in Embleton for a Robert B Graham and family (Piece 5176, Folio 40, page 4) looks likely.

and after that? I have no idea. Have tried census returns/ deaths/ marriages in England and over the border in Scotland and so far zilch :-(
I even tried looking at her employers, in case they'd moved and she went along, but they both died in July 1871 in Embleton (within a few days of each other I think).

If anyone feels inclined to look and can find anything at all for this girl I'd be very interested. Hopefully I am just missing the obvious as I'd really like a full set for this family :-)

On the 1881 census is a Mary Jane Wilkinson, born in Embleton, 1857 ;D
Living in Alnwick.
RG11; 5123; 84; 2

Unfortunately, she is single. But maybe worth persuing?

Also a Mary Johnston, also born Embleton in 1857.
She is a married lodger in Embleton.
RG11; 5125; 45; 13

Again, worth persuing?

Thanks

1906 Middlesborough - to George W Morris and the 1911 shows this Mary Jane Mavin as born 1886

1892 Cockermouth - I think this 'Mavin' should have said MaviR

1872 Lambeth - Bride's father was John and my Mary Jane would only have been 15 then anyway - bit young to flit off to London to marry.

I'll check out the Morpeth one later, Thanks for looking, its appreciated.

hmm, thanks for that Maureen, very interesting

Not writ in stone but the birth place is right , I can't see another Mary Mavin born around that time registered in Alnwick Reg. District, though there is one nearer in age that was born in Widdrington.

Will have a firkle round and see what happened to the girl from Widdrington, and keep firkling to see if I can find anyone in  1881 with or without a middle initial and maybe a couple of years out from when I know Mary Jane was born.
