Help with occupation on 1851 Census - COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Wednesday 22 May 19 15:18 BST (UK) »
I believe that the occupation of my ancestor here in the 1851 Census says "Sayer and Beer Seller". If that is right does anyone know what a Sayer is?

Many thanks.

My first thoughts are that it might be 'Sawyer',  although I don't know how compatible that would be  with selling beer!  I have someone in one of my tree who was a mechanic and beer seller, but he worked in a factory whilst his wife and daughters ran the ale-house.

My thoughts too.

Sawyer (occupation) For other uses, see . Sawyer is an occupational term referring to someone who saws wood, particularly using a pit saw either in a saw pit or with the log on trestles above ground or operates a sawmill. One such job is the occupation of someone who cuts lumber to length for the consumer market

In 1861 he was a "beer house keeper" only.
In 1841 there's a George Fryer of about the right age with similar name for wife, and that chap's either a "Lawyer" or a "Sawyer" ( I had one who was a "sawyer", and some other researcher obviously thought that wasn't posh enough, and deemed him a "Lawyer" -very unlikely in light of other details including where he lived!

Thanks to you both, that had occurred to me but I didn't think it fitted with his location etc but have just managed to find him on 1841 Census (which I had missed before!) and I believe that does say Sawyer. So thanks again for your help

On "Ancestry". They were at Hardinge Wood, Brieryhurst, Kidsgrove.
There was George 45, Mary A (wife)42, son Willie 18, grocer's assistant, sons Jesse 10, Alfred 8, George Hy 6, James 1 and Frank who was 4 months old. There was also a servant, and a visitor, who may have had a connection with that servant.
Hope that's some help.
