Birth Certificate U.D. meaning?
« on: Friday 24 May 19 14:11 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
New to this forum! I wanted to ask if there is any special meaning to the initials U.D. that is written under the address of where someone was born in a few of my ancestor's birth certificates.

For example:
76 Mayes Road U.D.
(this is in Wood Green, Edmonton)

Does the U.D. mean anything specific?

Thanks for the help!

This is quite usual and means 'Urban District'.  The local authority would have been an urban district council as I understand it.  There were rural districts as well, The certificates for these have 'RD' instead.
Welcome to Rootschat ! I should have said that first. Forgetting my manners, I'm afraid. I've had some wonderful help with family history on this site.  I hope you're having a good look round.

Welcome to RootsChat
UD means Urban District. The Public Health Act (1872) mapped out England into Sanitary Districts, both Urban and Rural. The 1894 Local Government Act, turned the Sanitary boards into District Councils  but retained the division of those in Urban and Rural areas.  See http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/types/type_page.jsp?unit_type=SAN_DIST

Excellent, thanks so much to both of you for your quick response!! Really appreciate it. My family search is going well, with the usual brick walls!

This forum has everything - so I will take a look through and see what else may help me in my search.

Thanks so much for asking this question. I was wondering the same thing also in relation to an ancestor with Edmonton UD on their birth registration.
