I hardly slept a wink last night.
I want to thank you all for all your hard work.
I now believe Louisa Jane corton/ Shaw is Louisa elks.

Over a coffee this morning I trawler through the newspaper cuttings I found her previous convictions, all based in uttoxeter, so I can see how the courts came to call her "Alice grey". It didn't help me much though.

Problem is now it has opened another can of worms. Which means I should probably close this thread and after some research, open another one.
Whilst she was being prosecuted in October 1853 for obtaining goods under false pretence s. She posted a bastardy claim against a Richard Whitehurst of Rochester and got awarded 1s 3d a week.!!!!

Glad you have reached a conclusion.
I was reading one of the accounts re A G -one with lots of aliases mentioned and also suspected offences covering a wide span of years and geographical areas.
Perhaps, as has been suggested, there was more than one woman given the infamous title or likened to her.

"Alice Grey" would seem to be a title given to any con-woman at this period. Whether there was ever an original "Alice Grey" I don't know.

This one was allegedly Mary Atkinson from Kendal according to the article. She claimed she was not guilty of "one twentieth" of crimes for which she was charged.
