Thanks, they could be.  Greenwood is a less common name when you move away from West Yorkshire.  And Jane could well want to call her daughter Fanny after her mother.  I haven't found the family on the 1871 census.

I couldn't find the family anywhere after this, and this reminded me of the family of Jane's sister Sarah, who emigrated to America during the "Lancashire Cotton Famine" of the 1860's, which somebody on this board told me was actually worse in Cheshire than in Lancashire, particularly bad in Cheshire (Stockport).  Shipping companies were offering cotton workers cheap passages to New York.  Jane's sister Sarah had died in 1858, but her husband, two daughters, and their stepmother had emigrated to Marion, Illinois, around 1863.

I found the 1880 United States Federal Census, showing Joseph Smith born about 1821 England, with wife Jane, and children Jane, Fanny, Sarah and Edith M.  No mention of Joseph.  They are living in North Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

I can't find any other censuses, but am looking.

This could be wrong person, but familysearch.org is showing a Find a Grave link to Joseph Smith the father in Providence, Rhode Island.  Cemetery: North Burial Ground.  Died 5th March 1913, born 26th December 1822.

No, that isn't him, I had a look at Find a Grave, his father was Otis Smith, born in the United States.

The family is also on the 1875 Rhode Island census, living in Johnston, Providence.  The same place where Joseph died in 1874, age 15.

Thank you.  This is helpful too as it lays the information clearly, and gives some information I didn't have, but late last night I opened a thread linking back to this one on the United States of America section, and a poster called Oldohiohome gave me a huge amount of information, including links to Find a Grave with photographs of their gravestones.

I was so tired, it was about 2 in the morning, I forgot to come back here to say I found the family in Rhode Island, USA, where Joseph the son died aged 15 in Johnston.

There is so much information that I am certain it is the right family, but what puzzles me is the women all give their ages a lot younger than they are, and Jane's age on her death record is 1835 but her baptism was definitely 1827, with a note on her baptism record that she was seven weeks old in late August 1827.  Maybe there was pressure on women in the USA, as I noticed another woman ancestor from a completely different part of my family tree, on emigrating to the USA even changed her name from Eliza to Dolly.  The men don't seem to.
