seeking death info for William Pointon from Tunstall, Staffordshire
« on: Saturday 25 May 19 20:55 BST (UK) »
William Pointon was born about 1843 in Tunstall. He married Selina Mason or Marston, (not sure about her maiden name). They moved to Hull between 1871 and 1881. He is not with them on the 1891 census. Selina is listed as widowed. I can not find any death certificate. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you got his date more exactly?

9 years old in 1851 - so born in 1842? However from the BMD index there is no birth registered in the district of Wolstanton for Wm Pointon in 1842 or 1843, only in 1841. I am pretty sure of his birth location = Tunstall

The entry on freebmd gives the birth of William Pointon at Wolstanton registration district as June 1841, so by April 1851 he would still be 9 years old? Just.

I have been doing a lot of research into old records from Tunstall, and the name Pointon/Poynton appears in them a long way back.
I think there are some old posts about Poyntons from Tunstall here on Rootschat. I'll see if I can find them.

There are lots for Pointon.
If you go to the 'Search' button, and put in Pointon, then choose just the Staffordshire Board, you may find something.

Mother's maiden name of that one is Hill, so possible marriage. I haven't checked the 1851 to see if names fit.

From FreeBMD.

Marriages Dec 1838
HILL    Elizabeth
POINTON    Thomas
Wolstanton &c.    17   315

ADDED: Probably not the right one as your's appears to have parents John and Arabella.

yes I think his parents are John and Arabella. His birth is not as mysterious as his death in Hull. Are there many missing death records for the time period around 1890?

What was his occupation? Could he have been a fisherman and been lost at sea, hence no death registration?

If you look at church burials, "unknown man " isn't so unusual even if he were land-based.
It's quite possible he isn't in the indexes (or it's not when you expect it to be).
With whom is the wife buried?
