Harriet Button PADFIELD B. 1883 Coleford, Somerset

The family story is that Harriet was deaf. I wondered if this would appear on the census in either 1891 or 1901? By 1911 she was living in Bristol.

In 1891 at home with her mother & stepfather and in 1901 in service; unfortunately neither make a mention of Harriet being deaf.

I just had a look at the 1911 census & Harriet is not marked as deaf on that one either

Thanks Phil. I know some years when the census was done, there was a column for 'disability' to be noted, and the family story is that Harriet was deaf. I wonder if those census years 1891, 1901 and 1911 there was capacity to record this? Nevertheless, it seems this is just another myth.

The Infirmity question was -

1911 - If any person included in the Schedule is (1) "Totally Deaf" or "Deaf and Dumb" ....

1891/1901 - If (1) Deaf-and-Dumb" (2) .....

Therefore, if the person was deaf only it would not be recorded 1891/1901 and if hearing was "impaired" only, the 1911 Census would not reflect that. .

But if she was in service (1901) would she have been taken on with an infirmity?

Not likely hanes teulu, I suppose. Even more reason to doubt the family story. Thanks for clarifying re 'infirmity' for those Census years.
