Emily is 36 in 1851 - plenty old enough to have had a previous marriage.  Have you ruled that out?

Thanks avm228. Interesting. There does seem to be a problem with the record to my mind

Yes JenB that's the census I meant and yes Mary Brown's mother is Mary Ballard.

Hadn't thought of a remarriage avm228. Will definitely look into that. On the census her eldest child is 6 which led me to this 1845 marriage.
Best wishes HL

James, grocer, and Emily of 11 High Street.

That also fits with their residence in 1851, 11 Brompton Road.

Thanks everyone. Looks like they married in 1842 then......but there's still a problem with the record!

Since I really wanted to confirm who her father was and connect her to a possible brother and since there is not a London Marriage record available it looks as though I need the certificate.

Thanks for all your help.
Best wishes HL
