1841?   New St, Kensington. Have seen Emma and Emily being interchangeable in the past. Father/grandfather's name fits Emily's first born. None born in county

George Ballard    75 - labourer
Mary Ballard    50 - dress maker
Emma Ballard    25  - dress maker

HO107;  690; 17; 29

There's a baptism for an Emily in Woolwich in the right time frame - parents James (a carpenter) and Mary. Siblings:

Harriet - 1813
Emily - 1815
Jemima - 1819

Who is the potential brother you wish to link to?

Thanks Mabel Bagshawe  :)

Firstly, the 1841 census that you found is probably not relevant as Mary Ballard is a former claymaker on the 1851 but on the 1841 Mary states she is a dressmaker.

The baptism record you found is very interesting indeed and I will be off to search for it in a mo.

The facts are as follows....... and I therefore apologise for my apparent muddled way of progressing .....

I have a Thomas Ballard, born around 1805 (possibly Kensington) who married Eleanor Collins on 28th May 1843 at St Paul, Hammersmith.  The London Marriage Record shows he is the son of James Ballard a carpenter and one of the witnesses is Emily Ballard.

Thomas died in 1860 and the 1851 census is rather unclear when it comes to reading his age.....it's been transcribed as 66 but looks more like 46 and he says he was born in Kensington.

I don't have enough info to trace him on the 1841.

Most people who are researching this family on Ancestry have researched no further than Thomas Ballard and Eleanor Collins.  However there are some who have him born 1807 in Eynesford, Kent, son of James and Mary Ballard.

I can see no evidence at all to attach him to this James and Mary (other than the fact that the 1807 Eynesford baptism states James is a carpenter)

I think the Woolwich baptism you have found is well worth investigating, especially if there is also one for Thomas Ballard, around 1805.

Best wishes HL

I read the 1851 as "former staymaker" [added i.e. corset maker] which fits very well with dressmaker!

Ok, you could be right there, so it's still a possibility.

if the 1851 census for Thomas is the one in Church Court, Kensington HO107/4368 folio 241 pg 20, I'd say his age is 44.

Yes that's the 1851 census I have for him osprey and it does look more like 44 born in Kensington.

I also found that baptism Mabel Bagshawe as a few people have attached it to him on Ancestry but I really can find no reason to assume that's the right baptism for him apart from the fact James has the right occupation. I'd like to find a London baptism for Thomas son of James a carpenter as that would make more sense.
Best wishes HL
