Styal Cottage Homes - Children to Canada 1869-1930
« on: Tuesday 16 August 05 10:39 BST (UK) »
 :) :) :)

Between 1869 and the 1930s, over 100,000 juvenile migrants were sent to Canada from Great Britain during the child emigration movement.

Motivated by social and economic forces, churches and philanthropic organizations sent orphaned, abandoned and pauper children to Canada.

Many believed that these children would have a better chance for a healthy, moral life in rural Canada, where families welcomed them as a source of cheap farm labour and domestic help.

One of these was Styal Cottage Homes in Cheshire and anyone interested in it, can obtain a book called 'A Styal of it's Own' by James Stanhope Brown , or visit the Wilmslow webwite

Hi Mobo, I have just come across your post - whilst searching for 'Styal Homes'  - my Grandad was sent to this orphanage aprox 1920.  So, thank you - and I will try and track a copy down.

Many thanks

Two other books that deal with the "child migrants" and "Home Children" (a terrible terminology) are
" Lost Children of the Empire" by Philip Bean and Joy Melville pubished by Unwin Hyman Limited in 1989 and "Empty Cradles" by Margaret Humphreys published by Corgi Book's 1995. Margaret Humphrey's is/was the Director and also founder of the Child Migrants Trust and I believe that it now has it's own web site to help those that were sent abroad and also their relatives that are looking for them.

Hi Wheeldon,

This is one of the posts I missed recently - I wonder, did you manage to get hold of a copy of this book after all  ?

Hi Mobo, not yet but thanks for reminding me - recent family events have left me a bit askew.  So, I'm trying to catch up on things that I should have done yonks ago.

I have a lot of catching up to do - will have a look for it in the next week.

Thanks again

Thanks Mobo - another site for me to search.

Our newly found 2nd cousin said that his Auntie has told stories about three of hubby's Grandad's siblings being taken to Canada about that time so once I get all the details I will search and see what I can find. Can't ask just yet though as his wife just lost her mother a month ago and I didn't want to intrude with questions about the family.
