Barnsley Grammar School 1867

In 1867, my Frederick Atkinson was a recipient of a Locke Scholarship to Barnsley Grammar School.  Can anyone please tell me if this is still standing and, if so, where? Was it known by this name, or was it called something else?  I am trying to locate a picture of it,

Barnsley Grammer School (Holgate school) was closed around 2012 and I think it was demolished I did hear they were leaving the frontage but I couldn't tell you if they did it was on Shaw Lane

BUT this site says that Holgate school was celebtrating it's 100th anniversary in 2012, so probably not the school Carolyn is looking for

I never know the correct way to put links in so have copied & pasted just hope it works, I know there was a big who ha when people found out that the school was closing around the same time more schools were demolished, Charter & Broadway Schools were demolished and is now a housing estate.

Holgate School was a state school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was closed in 2012, when it was merged with The Kingstone School to form Horizon Community College. After Holgate closed, it was demolished and the site was turned into a car park for Horizon Community College.

Thanks, both of you. I've been doing some research in the newspaper database at FindMyPast, and it would seem the school was situated on Castlereagh Street.  I also found a Durham University e-thesis about education for working class children in Barnsley, detailing Barnsley's endowed grammar schools in the 19th century, and this shows that it was not the Holgate school, which was vastly bigger and better funded.  It describes Barnsley Grammar School as being rather run-down. The Locke Scholarships founded in 1861 seem to have breathed a bit of life into it, though not immediately. In 1865, a return by the Assistant Commissioner for Yorkshire to the Taunton Commission described it as "languid, the numbers low and the teaching inefficient."  Apparently the headmaster did not welcome Locke scholars, because in his opinion, their presence prevented the presence of boys from "homes of a superior class." It's a fascinating thesis!

The original Barnsley Grammar opened in the 1600s was on Church Street nearly opposite the current town hall. I think it is now the art gallery. The grammar school was moved to Shaw Lane 1912? I studied there in the 60s.
