The shadowy figure - I thought it looked like a woman watching and smiling from the other side of the mesh.

Looby :)

I agree that it looks like a woman smiling. I just wish she could speak to me!! ;D

I think your grandfather might have a bandage on his left wrist/arm.

If you have his war records, it may be possible to narrow the date by looking for record of that injury.  I think he is holding his arm as if it is injured also.

Been having a go at reducing the glare from top left of photo.  Haven't done much good, but further observations . . . . the woman doesn't look Indian (would appear to be dressed English style) and the young man front could well be Indian.

I also got the impression that the woman was in European clothes and had her hair up, perhaps?
Then I wondered if it was another soldier  ??? ::) ..... I thought the person's neckline had the look of the army uniforms and there could be a button  ::).....or maybe it's a broach.
Looby ;D

I can confirm substantial stone building and wrought iron fence in the background. Not Gallipoli. Pith helmet. Possibly Bagdad or Cairo or the like in the middle east. Figure in the background is possibly a local. May be a waiter.

As there were not any NF in Bagdad in 1918 I think you can rule out that guess.  I suspect Malta is the best option with the European woman in the background which suggests he transferred to the 2nd Garrison Bn.  The darker skinned soldier may well be Maltese.

I think it might be a shirt sleeve poking out of his cuff rather than a bandage. If he was injured then that would marry up with a transfer to a Garrison Battalion.

I wondered about shirt sleeve, but he is the only one with A shirt sleeve.
It looks too long for a shirt sleeve to me and too thick.   Could be wrong!   ;)

Gosh, well noticed Wiggy! I think I have some records for him but they seem to have disappeared! I need to do some more searching in my late mother's papers!  :)
